How to forward calls on Cox Business
Forward a Cox Business phone line: every call (*72), only unanswered calls (*92), or only busy calls. How to turn each on, off, and test it.
Updated 5 min read

Short answer
On a Cox Business phone, dial *72 and then the number to forward every call, or *92 to forward only the calls nobody answers. Turn them off with *73 and *93. To forward only while your line is busy, use Cox Business MyAccount online or the MyAccount app. Online, you can also pick how many rings happen before an unanswered call moves on.
Before you start
You need the number you want your calls to go to (an answering service, a cell phone, or your Nacho number), plus either a phone on your Cox Business line or a login to Cox Business MyAccount.
Dial the forward-to number exactly as you would if you were calling it. For a long-distance or toll-free number, include the 1 and the area code.
- Cox doesn't allow forwarding to international numbers.
- Forwarding can't be turned on while your phone service is down or part of an outage.
- Cox's own website now says Cox is now Spectrum. The steps below come from the Cox Business help pages.
The codes at a glance
| To do this | Dial or tap |
|---|---|
| Forward every call | *72 + number |
| Stop forwarding every call | *73 |
| Forward calls nobody answers | *92 + number |
| Stop forwarding unanswered calls | *93 |
| Forward calls while you're on the phone (VoiceManager) | *90 + number |
| Stop forwarding busy calls (VoiceManager) | *91 |
The *90 and *91 codes come from Cox's code list for VoiceManager and IP Centrex lines. If *90 doesn't work on your line, use the busy setting online (see below).
Forward every call
- Pick up a phone on your Cox line and listen for the dial tone.
- Dial
*72, then listen for the dial tone. - Dial the number you want your calls to go to.
- Listen for a stutter dial tone followed by a regular dial tone. That means it's on. Hang up.
While every call is forwarded, your phone gives one short ring each time a call goes through, and you can still use it to make calls.
To change the forward-to number, turn forwarding off with *73, then turn it back on with *72 and the new number.
Forward only the calls nobody answers
- Pick up a phone on your Cox line and listen for the dial tone.
- Dial
*92, then listen for the dial tone. - Dial the number you want your calls to go to.
- Forwarding turns on once that number answers.
- If the number is busy or nobody picks up, hang up and repeat these steps within two minutes. Listen for a stutter dial tone followed by a regular dial tone.
To change the number, dial *93, wait for the confirmation tone and hang up, then dial *92 again with the new number.
Set it up online or in the app
Online you can turn on busy forwarding and choose how many rings come before an unanswered call is forwarded. Cox says which forwarding options you see depends on your service package.
- Go to myaccount-business.cox.com and log in.
- In the Services section, click the Voice icon. If you don't see it, click the arrow to show more options.
- If you're the account's owner or admin changing another person's line: expand User & System Management, click Users, Accounts & Call Settings, open the Call Settings tab and click the number.
- Expand the Call Settings section and click Call Forwarding.
Then turn on the option you want, click Edit if the number box isn't showing, type the number in Forward To: and click Save:
- Forward All Calls: every call goes to the other number.
- Forward When Busy: calls go to the other number while your line is busy, so callers don't hear a busy signal.
- Forward When No Answer: in the Rings Before menu, pick anything from none to 20 rings.
In the Cox Business MyAccount app: sign in, go to the Home tab, scroll to the Cox Business Voice section and tap Call Forwarding. Check that Rules For at the top shows the right line. Owners and admins can tap Switch User to pick another line.
If it doesn't work
- No-answer forwarding won't stick: check that voicemail is off on the line, and that the other number answered your
*92call (or that you dialed*92again within two minutes). - Calls aren't forwarding at all: check that your phone service isn't down. Forwarding can't be turned on during an outage.
- The forward-to number won't take: make sure it isn't an international number, and that it's dialed the way you'd call it, with the 1 for long distance.
- You can't see or change forwarding online: ask the account's Profile Owner or Profile Admin to assign the number to your login.
Using this with Nacho
With Nacho, you choose how calls reach Nacho: every call, only the calls nobody picks up, or only when your line is busy. On Cox, those are *72, *92, and the busy setting above. Nacho answers with your restaurant's name, then handles the call using your menu, your hours and the answers you've written. Orders show up on your Orders screen.
Questions owners ask
- Can I forward Cox Business calls during a power outage?
- Cox's online settings include Forward When Not Reachable, which sends calls to another number in the event of a power outage or other interruption. You can also set it in the MyAccount app.
- Can I turn off the short ring on forwarded calls?
- Online, Forward All Calls has a Ring Reminder setting in the Options/Manage menu. It decides whether you get an alert for each forwarded call: choose Ring Reminder (On) or Ring Reminder (Off), then click Save.
- Can I forward only calls from certain numbers?
- Yes, with Call Forwarding Selective in MyAccount online. You add a rule, choose which callers it applies to, enter the number to forward to, and pick when it applies with your regular or holiday schedule. Cox says this one is still set up online, not in the app.
Want calls answered while you're busy?
Nacho answers your restaurant's calls, takes orders with prices from your own menu, and speaks English, Spanish and French. Enter your number and Nacho will call you, so you can order something and hear for yourself.
